The number one question I get asked all the time is: ” Why did you become a therapist?”.

I am not sure why this question is so popular, so I am left to my conclusions. There are a couple of reasons why I think this is a common question. First, people are curious if their therapist has also struggled through difficulties. Second, they want to know if their therapist is passionate about the work they do. Let’s break it down.

Has my Christian Therapist walked through similar struggles?

A strong therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client is vital for success in therapy.

I believe many people ask the question: “Why did you become a therapist?” to learn about the struggles their therapist has faced.

When people learn that their therapist has had their ups and downs in life, people can easily relate to their therapist. It helps people know their therapist understands what they are going through. Therefore, making the alliance between therapist and client strong.

However, too much self-disclosure can be damaging to the therapeutic relationship. So do not fret if a therapist is vague or does not share details when asked this question.

When a therapist shares information about themselves, they do so with careful consideration. The purpose of sharing information should only be to help the client.

Is my Christian Therapist passionate about their work?

Engaging in therapy is a financial commitment. Therefore, you are going to want to make sure your therapist is passionate about her work. If not, then you might not be getting good therapy.

Asking the question, Why did you become a therapist?; is helpful when determining if your therapist is passionate about their work.

3 Reasons I became a Christian Therapist.

Reason #1 : God has called me into this profession.

It might sound cliche, but it is true. I believe being a therapist is what God has called me to do.

The Lord has all given us spiritual gifts. Sometimes those gifts can change according to the purpose God has for us at any given moment.

I believe God has given me the gift of wisdom and discernment (Intuition). These gifts are helpful in the work I do.

After sessions, I feel energized and excited. It always brings joy to my heart when I see my clients improve and walk toward healing. I love the work I do.

Reason #2 : I am passionate about helping people through their struggles because of my life difficulties.

Every single person has gone through stuff or will go through stuff. Jesus tells us we will have tribulation, but to take heart, because He has overcome the world (John 16:33).

Therefore, yes, I have had my share of difficulties and trauma. This ties in to reason #2 of why I became a therapist. God not only has called me into this work but has used my life struggles to help others through theirs.

” And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” -Romans 8:28. I could write a blog post on this verse alone. One of my favorites!

Receiving therapy and growing in my faith has helped me heal and let go of old wounds. Therefore, I am passionate about using the word of God and the therapeutic tools He has given to help others heal as well.

Picture of the Bible- Jesus is needed in the Christian counseling experience

Reason #3 : Jesus is the answer.

I am a Christian. Therefore, I chose to share with potential clients my Christian faith. Sharing my faith and providing Christain counseling is helpful for other Christians looking for Christian-based counseling.

Jesus is the answer. Now, that is not saying counseling is a no-no for Christians. However, Jesus is vital in the counseling process towards healing.

God has provided tools and therapeutic interventions to help people heal, such as EMDR. Coupling the word of God and these interventions provide deep healing in the counseling experience.

There is so much to say on this topic, and I can even get into apologetics here. However, that is beyond the scope of this blog.

There is absolute truth. Jesus is the truth. The word of God is truth. We can trust God and His promises. There is so much wisdom and comfort in scripture that can contribute to the healing journey. However, I am only going to discuss one truth in this blog.

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away”- Revelation 21:4.

Wow. What a comfort. Those who have accepted this gift of salvation from Jesus Christ will one day experience perfect peace in eternity with Him. Their pain will be forever gone. There is an end in sight to the pain and the turmoil.

If you do not know Christ and want to learn how to be saved, check out my blog, “How to Recieve Salvation.”

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18. The Lord is near to those who are hurting. Therefore, when you are in pain and struggling with the past, you can cling to the Lord and receive his presence, peace, and comfort.

These are amazing truths that strengthen the journey toward healing.
