 Teen Counseling

I am no longer accepting teen clients at this time.

As a parent, you feel completely lost.

The feeling of helplessness is nothing new; you have no clue how to help your teen. Gone are the days when a simple kiss on the forehead made all things better. Man, you miss those days.

When did everything get so complicated? The days of being a teenager are different than when you were a teen, and you feel so disconnected.

Your child used to be carefree, energized, and joyful.

Then things changed.

Transitioning into High School is when it all started; on top of that, things have not been easy at home, and life for your teen has been full of ups and downs.

She has become more withdrawn. No longer does she spend time with friends or family; she practically lives in her room. Most nights, it is a struggle to have her come down for dinner.

Anything you say leaves your teen lashing out in anger- it feels like you are constantly walking on eggshells.

The constant fighting is exhausting.

Anxiety has increased for your teen.

When you didn’t think it could get any worse, 2020 happened. That was like throwing gasoline into an already burning fire. This past year has left your teen spiraling downward.

Virtual learning was a nightmare. Your teen had so much trouble focusing and staying on task. As a result, her grades gradually got worse and worse.

Low grades were devastating to her. She felt like she was in a deep hole and unable to get out. Her stress and anxiety level was high until she could not do it anymore.

Grades did not matter to her anymore, and she gave up. Consequently, this gave her more anxiety. Then she would get anxious about being anxious.

Panic attacks started– this was new. Some days you would just hold her as she struggled to breathe and cried uncontrollably.

You wish you could hug the pain away.

You want your teen to get the most out of counseling.

You’re ready to invest in your teen; you cannot stand by and just wait for her to grow out of this. You want to see her thrive and be able to cope with difficult emotions. For her no longer to be down on herself and full of self-doubt. And you want her to laugh and smile again.

What if my teen is hesitant to try counseling?

It is common for a teenager to be hesitant about coming to therapy. There is still some stigma around counseling and talking with a therapist can be intimidating.

With that said, your teen can be brought into therapy even if there is a little hesitancy. After a few sessions, your teen might warm up and start to like the idea of therapy.

However, if you have a teen that is absolutely refusing to engage in counseling, now is not the best time. Therapy is a commitment that requires time and work.

You wonder if therapy for your teen will really work.

Imagine…

  • Your teen, getting the life back in her eyes and feeling motivated again.
  •  Getting out of her room, spending time with family and friends, and laughing again.
  •  Being able to manage her stress and anxiety in healthier ways and not just sleep it off.
  •  Decreasing the number of anxiety attacks until they are nonexistent.
  •  Feeling empowered to help your teen through the difficult things’ life brings.
  •  Believing your role as a parent is the most important thing in her life.

How Teen Counseling can Help

In Teen Counseling your teen will

  • Learn the tools and skills to cope with anxiety, difficult emotions, and life stressors.
  • Be provided a space  to be open, express emotion, and work through the hard stuff
  • Receive support in healing from traumatic experiences through EMDR or narrative therapy.

How will I be involved in my teen’s counseling?

Strong therapeutic rapport is vital for successful counseling; therefore, I strongly encourage as much confidentiality as possible between your teen and me.

However, when there are safety concerns, you will be informed, and I will work with your teen on how best to discuss the issue.

As a parent, you will be aware of treatment goals and treatment modalities used in the counseling session. In counseling you will also learn the skills your teen is learning.

Before your Teen starts Teen Counseling

I provide teen counseling in CO for teens 15-17 years of age only.

If parents of a teen are going through a contentious divorce, unfortunately, I will not be able to work with the teen.

Also, I will not be able to work with a teen whose parents are in the middle of a custody battle.

Lastly, because I am an online practice only, I do not work with teens who experience moderate to severe suicidal thoughts, self-harm behavior and excessive drug use. These above issues are better suited for in-person counseling.
