You’ve tried to figure out things on your own by increasing self-care and buying self-help books. These things have helped, but they are short-lived. Some days you pretend like nothing is wrong, and you bury the issues deep down. As a result, you feel exhausted and hopeless.

You need help. Therefore, you are ready to find a Christian therapist. However, you are not sure where to begin.

I get it. Finding a therapist is not an easy task. It can be tiring to look through countless profiles and websites.

In this blog, I will provide you five tips on how to find the right Christian therapist.

Finding the right Christian Therapist in Denver, Colorado

Tip #1  Why are you seeking Christian counseling?

I am a huge fan of keeping a journal. Therefore, I encourage those starting the process of seeking a Christian therapist to keep a journal. For instance, write down the reasons why you are seeking Christian counseling. Also, write down what you are looking for in a Christian therapist. Lastly, write down the goals you are hoping to achieve from therapy.

Finding a Christian Therapist can feel overwhelming. However, writing down what you are looking for in a Christian therapist can make the process easier. Keeping a journal will give you a guide when searching.

Tip #2  How do you want to pay for Christian Counseling?

Christian counseling is an investment. Therefore, it is good to consider how much you would like to spend on therapy services. Also, consider how you would like to pay for services. Would you like to use insurance or pay out of pocket? There are many reasons why some may or may not chose to use their insurance.

Lastly, when considering your budget keep in mind that weekly appointments are beneficial for the first 2-3 months. Attending weekly therapy appointments, in the beginning, helps you to build rapport with your therapist. A good relationship between you and your therapist increases the chances of meeting treatment goals.

In conclusion, understanding the amount you want to spend and how you want to pay for therapy will help you narrow your search when finding a therapist.

Tip # 3  Where to find a Christian Therapist.

Now that you have written down your needs in therapy, what you want in a therapist, and how you plan to pay for services, you are ready to start your search. Where do you look?

There are many directories to consider when searching for a therapist. I will discuss three. The three directories to consider are Psychology Today, GoodTherapy, and the Christian counselor directory.

The Christian counselor directory is helpful when searching for a Christian therapist. However, this directory does not allow you to filter other preferences.

Psychology Today and GoodTherapy allow you to filter preferences. There are several categories such as insurance, price, types of therapy, issues, etc. With each category, you will select an option based on your preferences. For example, under the tab labeled “types of therapy,” you will choose Christian counseling. After that, you will see a list of therapists that meet your requirements.

Google is another option when searching for a therapist. You can type into google ” Christian counseling in Denver.” After that, a list of therapist’s websites that provide Christian counseling pop up.

Now that you have narrowed down your search, it is time to do your due diligence and do a deep dive. I suggest narrowing it down to 3-5 therapists and thoroughly look through their website.

Tip # 4  spend time looking at their website.

A Christian therapist’s website should give you ample information to help you decide if you want to work with that therapist. Your journal will come in handy most when looking through websites.

What do you look for in a website?

First, is the Christian therapist able to help you? For example, you are struggling with anxiety. Therefore, the therapist’s website should discuss how they help people struggling with anxiety.

Second, check the about me page. The about me page will give you a feel of who the therapist is, their style, and what it would be like working with them. Also, that is where you will learn about their credentials and additional training.

Third, check out their page that discusses how to get started. There you will learn their hours, whether or not they provide in-person or online, rates and fees, etc.

Lastly, is there a statement of faith? Finding a Christian therapist that holds a Biblical worldview can be challenging. Some therapists claim to be Christian. However, information from their website does indicate a Biblical worldview. Therefore, a statement of faith will help you determine whether or not the therapist shares your worldview.

Of course, there are other details to look into based on your needs and preferences.

Tip # 5 utilize their free phone consultation

Many Christian therapists offer a free phone consultation. However, some do not. You will have to decide whether or not you desire to have a phone consultation.

I believe all therapists should offer a phone consultation- just my personal opinion. A phone consultation will give you a chance to connect with that therapist, ask questions that you have, and learn about the therapist’s experience and style. After, you can then determine if you would like to book a first appointment with that therapist.

I hope this blog was helpful for you on how to find the right Christian therapist.
