Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and resolve traumatic memories and experiences. Here's how it generally works and helps:
Processing Traumatic Memories: EMDR helps people process distressing memories and reduce their emotional charge. It involves recalling the traumatic memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation (typically guided eye movements, but sometimes taps or sounds). This helps the brain process the memory in a more adaptive way.
Bilateral Stimulation: During EMDR sessions, the therapist will guide the client through a series of rapid, side-to-side eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This is believed to help the brain process the traumatic memory as if it were happening in real-time, but in a less distressing manner.
